Black Mirror: Art as Social Satire - London
With the V&A, the Natural History Museum and the British Museum on their doorsteps, guests at our London hotels have a wealth of cultural options to choose from. This winter that choice has been enhanced with the opening of a new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in Duke of York Square. 'Black Mirror' explores art’s role in social satire and considers how political uncertainty has influenced artists in recent years. Using media such as collage, caricature, photography and installation, the exhibition shows how satire can provide light relief from the tumultuous world of modern-day politics. The show features some of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists including Turner Prize nominee Richard Billingham, whose photography pioneered “squalid realism”; Polish artist Aleksandra Mir, who parodies newspapers by drawing them with childlike tools; and Chilean sculptor Alejandra Prieto, who transforms rejected lumps of coal into desirable objects of opulence.
